Our Mission

The Institute, the second of its kind in the country, is a national center offering regular courses in film and television by imparting practical and theoretical training in all major aspects of film and television fields. The Institute grants Post Graduate Diploma as may be instituted by prescribed courses of study. The Institute also coordinates the activities of education and skill development in the field of film & television conception & production. The Institute has also provision for research and exploration studies in the sociology and culture and technology of film & television.

OUR VISION

The Institute aims at producing film & television professionals capable of independent creative and innovative work in the field, and of directly contributing to the Industry. Our vision is to endeavor constantly to raise the technical standards of Indian film & television software and to facilitate regular flow of fresh ideas and new technical standards in the fields of cinema & television in India. Our aim is to create a new awareness among the future workforce in films & television on potentialities of their media as means of education and artistic expression.

POLICY

The domain of cinema revolves around the objective of how to communicate with picture and sound in a manner that is creative. Film for the last hundred years has in fact been effectively doing so. The aim of Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute is to accord its students with appropriate skills and techniques to master the hardware & software of the film and video industry, so that they may reach qualitative standards in their respective fields to gain employment in the above industry.

This Institute has recently been admitted as candidate member to the ‘CILECT’ – International forum for Film Schools of the world.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE & INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES

The Institute is having a vast area of 39.36 acres located at the Eastern Metropolitan Bye Pass Road with the following blocks:

The Administrative Block:

The two-storied administrative block houses the offices of the Chairman, the Director, the Dean, the Registrar, a Committee Room and various administrative wings.

Film Direction Block:

The three-storied Film Direction block is presently housing the offices of the Direction Faculty, AC Class Rooms with digital projection, a Computer Lab and a Store Room for study-films. In addition there is a Faculty Room with viewing facilities and one Editing Room, Digital camera with accessories for departmental exercises.

Audiography Block:

A three-storied Sound recording block, sound editing and track laying at post-production stage. Offices of the sound department, Class Rooms, and Electronics laboratory are also located in this block. The department is equipped with Dolby film mixing studios.

 

Editing Block:

The three-storied Editing block has separate section for Film and a Video. The Film Section has 10 Steenbeck Editing Suits in separate chambers and a large hall with 10 editing table, synchronizers, splicers etc. There is also one dust-free negative cutting chamber with four cutting table. The video section has Digital Video editing suites facilitating editing work. There is also Avid Media Composer with film cut and dubbing option and Final Cut Pro. In addition to these are six pic-syncs and a movieola available for film editing. The Department is further equipped with computers for highend digital compositing in Smoke – state-of-the-art digital platform.

The Cinematography Block:

The Motion Picture Photography Department is presently located next to the film and television studios and is equipped with a wide range of cameras, including two 2C 35 mm cameras, one SR III and two SR II cameras (both silent 16mm), One ARRI 435 (a new generation advanced non-blimp 35 mm camera with video assist system), two Evolution 35mm blimpped(silent) cameras; digital video cameras two betacam recorders, other Digital cameras of different models. The department has accessories for all the cameras including light meters and other accessories, including HMI lights. Department also has modest collection of shooting accessories such as shooting cranes, trolley etc.

The Still Photography Section:

The Still Photography Section, located above the canteen, has a Studio with professional facilities along with six small black & white and colour laboratories. Equipped with conventional still cameras of different makes and models with various lenses and attachments. The Still Photography section has facilities updated for digital still photography.

 Production section:

Manages the production related matters of students’ projects providing logistical help. The property & costume section and set construction section works under the production section. They have dedicated storage to store set and furniture materials.

The Library Block:

The fast growing library of the Institute is located in a two-storied house and is equipped with an impressive collection of more than five thousand books, specially on film and related subjects, a vast collection of VHS cassettes, LDs, DVDs and VCDs. Apart from book, the library subscribes to a large number of magazines of cinema, television, media, technology, performing arts and other related subjects. The library at present is in the process of collecting classical films on DVD. It has a large reading hall, a well-equipped video viewing room with several viewing booths and a music room with booths for listening and studying music. The audio section has 450 audio CDs and cassettes.

Film Library:

The institute Film Library has a Collection of 1382 films (Feature-496 and Documentary-886). The Cine Central, a Calcutta-based film society has deposited collection of their films donated to them by different foreign embassies to this Institute. The prints and being maintained and preserved by this Institute for use on academic purpose only. The masterpiece films by the eminent Indian filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mirnal Sen etc. are also available in the Institute Library.

Auditorium & Screening Facilities:

SRFTI has an impressive range of facilities for preview and screening of films both in celluloid and video format. The sophisticated auditorium-Main Theatre with a capacity of 370 seats, equipped with both celluloid and Video projection facility and Dolby EX surround sound, is also used for convocation, seminar, cultural activities. The smaller Preview Theatre has 72 seats and is equipped with two 35 mm projectors, one 16 mm Xenon Projector and a video projector. In addition, there is an open Air Theatre that can accommodate more than five hundred viewers with 35 mm film projection facilities.

Other Facilities:

(i) Post Office: Department of Post & Telegraph has set up a unit (Post Office) inside the premises to facilitate the different postal facilities to students, administration and for other necessary needs.

(ii) Students’ Mess & Canteen: A Mess is run by Student to cater their needs.             A Canteen is also run inside the Institute for the benefit of the employees as well as outsiders coming to the Institute for different activities.

COURSES OFFERED

SRFTI is presently offering 3-year Post-Graduate Diploma Courses leading to:

                  1.   Diploma in Film Direction

                  2.   Diploma in Motion Picture Photography

                  3.   Diploma in Editing

                  4.   Diploma in Sound Recording

The Institute has a capacity of 40 students per year. All the discipline has the capacity of 10 students each, in each batch. Out of which 8 seats are reserved for the students from Afro-Asian countries.

Courses Structure

42 weeks of an Integrated Course (common to all students in a batch), followed by 84 weeks of specialisation in respective discipline. The entire course is divided into a total of six semesters, each of approximate 20 weeks duration. The Medium of instruction is English but freedom is given to the student to choose the language of the Diploma Film at the end of the course.

Essential Qualification for Admission

    3.   For admission to specialisation courses in:

Direction & Screenplay Writing                                 Graduate in any Discipline from a

Cinematography/Motion Picture Photography            recognized University or

Editing                                                                           equivalent.

    4.   For admission to specialisation course in:

Sound Recording      Graduate from a recognized University or equivalent with Physics as one of the subjects at +2 level.

 

Detail of the Entrance Examination:

Stage I

The Institute conducts a written examination for all eligible candidates in various parts of the Country. The written examination will consists of two papers:

  Paper-I :         General Knowledge & Mental Aptitude

  (Duration 1 hour)

Objective Type and Comprehension Test, Common to all candidates. General Knowledge will have questions on Art & Culture, Society & People with main focus on India.

  Paper-II:           Specific Area Aptitude (Duration 1 hour 30 minutes)

                           Separate papers as per area of specialisation applied for viz. (I) Direction & Screenplay Writing, (ii) Motion Picture Photography, (iii) Editing & (iv) Sound Recording

Stage-II

The Candidate qualifying at the written examination (stage-I) will be called for an Interactive Orientation Session, followed by Viva Voce by a Board of Experts to be held in the Institute Campus. The Final selection will be based on the candidates performance both in the interactive Orientation Session and the Viva Voce.

MANAGEMENT & ORGANISATIONAL FRAMEWORK:

SRFTI is an autonomous Institution under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, run by a Society Constituted by the Government of India. The Society is headed by a President and runs the Institute through a Governing Council that is constituted with selected members of the Society. The Governing Council is the supreme body for all executive functions of the Institute. As per the Bye Laws, the President of the Society is also the Chairman of the Governing Council. In the various activities of the Institute, the Governing Council. In the various activities of the Institute, the Government Council is assisted by duly constituted other committees/Council viz.

             A.   Standing Finance Committee                   (SFC)

             B.   Academic Council                                   (AC)

             C.   Technical Committee                                (TC)

Apart form such bodies Governing Council may form various body/sub committee from time to time. The Society, Governing Council and Standing Finance Committee are represented by the Government through ex-officio member constituting of officials of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. The general meeting of the Society is  held atleast once a year while Governing Council & other bodies meet periodically, at least three or four times.

Director is the head of the Institute and work under the guidance of the Governing Council. He is assisted by a Dean in academic affairs and a Registrar in administrative matters.

   1. The Diploma Films made by the Students of this Institute have bagged three National Awards in the 48th National Film Award.

   2. All the eight Diploma Film Produced by this Institute was selected in Kerala Film School Competition.

   3. EGOTIC WORLD – Mr. Milind Nagamule won a Trophy in Kodak Film School Competition

   4. EGOTIC WORLD – has entered in KODAK International Film School Competition. Director – Mr. Vipin Vijay

   5. The Diploma Film “KHOJ’’ directed by Mr. Tridib Poddar has been selected for screening in Cannes Film Festival.

   6. International Student Film Festival of India:

This Institute had organized the first International Student Film Festival of India – CLAPSTICK-2002. It has been proposed that this Festival will be held in every alternate year as a part of exchanging of global cultures keeping in view the sprit of international brotherhood. This Institute is going to organize Clapstick 2008 at the first quarter of next year.

OUR COMMITMENT TO CITIZEN WITH GRIEVANCES

Any Citizen, not satisfied by any service of the Office of SRFTI of aggrieved by any other action or inaction by the office, can seek redressal of his/her grievances through the Grievance Officer of the Institute. Every such Citizen shall be entitled to information about the action taken on his/her grievance within a period of 45 days from the date on which the complaint is received in his Office.
